Blanche White describes herself as the color of an eggplant and size sixteen. She has returned for the summer from Boston to her hometown of Farleigh, North Carolina. On the Amtrak train, she meets Thelvin Lewis, who may become her man friend. Blanche helps her best friend Ardell with her new catering business. At a catered function, Blanche sees David Palmer, the man who raped her years ago. She panics and is immediately brought back to that moment. When a former employer asks Blanche to investigate Karen, David’s sister, she gets more than she bargained. Her life is threatened multiple times before she begins to be afraid.
The book has a steady pace, well developed characters, and is written in the third person point of view. The book points out that racism is still a great concern in North Carolina. Blanche is a wonderful character. She is big and loud and says what is on her mind. There are mentions of rape and domestic violence in this book so it may be a trigger for some. I enjoyed reading this book and hope to read more of Blanche’s adventures.
