Elsie Camden was eleven years old when the Cowls took her under their wing. They found her a home and would give her assignments using her spellbreaker skills to help others from harm. As she grew to a young woman, she began working for a stone mason but continues her missions for the Cowls.

On one occasion she was told the servants in a duke’s home were being locked in and kept as slaves. She goes to the house under the guise of a woman selling food and removes the spell. The Cowls are not happy with her and accuse her of not doing her job, so she returns at night. This time luck is not on her side, and she is caught in the act. Bacchus Kelsey is a Spellmaker from Barbados living much of his life in England. He is staying with the Duke of Kent and believes Elsie to be a thief. He blackmails her into working with him to remove old spells on the property.

This is the first book in the series. It is fast paced, characters are well developed, and it is written in the third person point of view. If you enjoy sci fi and fantasy books with a bit of magic, you will like this book.
