Gavin Harris sneaks away to join the war in Europe as part of the OSS. After not hearing from him, his sister Catherine “Cat” starts making inquiries and is recruited by the OSS. She is flown to occupied France with a radio operator, but their plane is shot down far from their target. She is taken to the home of a Vichy Captain. They believe she is the missing cook, Celine. She does not tell them the truth. Manan is the chef in the chateau and is actively working in the resistance. In 1951 Cat goes back to France still looking for Gavin after receiving a telegram that he is still alive. She meets Julia Child while taking cooking classes.
The book has a steady pace, the characters are well developed, and it is written in the third person point of view. The narrator does an excellent job giving voice to the different characters.
