Hannah is hearing impaired. She always hears “whispers.” She wears an aid to block them out. Her stepfather, Jeff, uses her ability to hear the whispers as an advantage at work. Suddenly, she is no longer needed. Now she and her mother have different names and are hiding from Jeff. They take off and Hannah is Becca King. Her mother drops her off at the ferry for Whitby Island. The only connection she has to her mother is a burner phone. The plans are for Hannah to stay with Carol, an old friend, until Laurel can get them settled in Nelson, a small Canadian town. Things immediately go wrong when Carol does not meet her at the dock. Becca rides her bike to Carol’s house only to find out she is dead.

The book has a steady pace, the characters are developed, and it is written in the third person point of view. The book ends with a cliffhanger leaving it open to another book in a series.
