Julie is a single mother coping with a teenage son with learning disabilities and a moody teenage daughter. She goes out with a few friends for drinks. Felicity Calvert is going to meet her son James at the bus stop when she notices a young woman walking with him. He introduces her as Lily Marsh, a student teacher that needs a place to rent for the rest of the school term. Felicity shows Lily the cottage then Lily leaves abruptly. When Felicity, her husband Peter, and his three friends: Gary, Clive, and Samuel go down to the water to celebrate Peter’s birthday, they come across the body of a young woman. She is in a small pool of water surrounded by flowers. Is it a coincidence or are these two deaths related?

The story is written in the third person point of view, it has a steady pace, and the characters are well developed. This is the third book in the Vera Stanhope series. If you like the television series, you will like the book since it provides more background into Vera’s character.
