Zane Clearwater’s boss, Randy, tries to talk him into stealing turtle eggs but he declines. Unfortunately, Randy blames him anyway and Zane is fired from his job at the zoo. After 18 months of sobriety, Zane hits the bottle hard and blacks out. He wakes in the morning to find his mother had died in a mobile home fire. Now it’s just him and his teenage sister, Lettie. They must make a life for themselves, but before will it hit a wall before it can start. Zane receives a text that his mother had been keeping lies. He begins questioning everything.

The book begins with a death and ends with a funeral. It has a fast pace, the characters are somewhat developed, and it is written in the third person point of view. There are aspects of Zane’s Cherokee heritage he must face or at least learn to deal with along with the fact that his father, long thought dead, was in fact, very much alive. This was a quick read and definitely an underdog story.
