Bloomsbury Girls
This book follows the lives of three women that work at the Bloomsbury Bookstore in the 1950s. Vivien is a single woman working as a staff member. She is accused of stealing a customer’s Cartier watch until the watch is examined, and the engraving is to Vivien. Grace is a married woman with two young boys in an unsatisfied marriage. She is the secretary to Herbert Dutton, the general manager. Evie Stone is a Cambridge scholar that is in search of a rare book supposedly sold to the store as part of a collection.
It is a challenging time for women in the workplace. Men returned from the war and resumed their jobs displacing many women. These women are exceptional. They are intelligent and driven. The book has a steady pace, the characters are well developed, and it is written in the third person point of view. I enjoyed having a peek inside these women’s lives. The are all different but work together well as a team. If you enjoy stories about strong women, you will like this book.
