After twenty-seven years treating patients in emergency rooms, Dr. Mona Balogh noticed a trend: from heart failure to addiction, people chronically use ERs to address disease. These "frequent flyers" are ER regulars with little understanding of their illness or how to help themselves. Dr. Balogh knew these patients deserved more from medicine-there had to be a better way. In How to Stay Out of My Emergency Room, Dr. Balogh combines Western and Eastern approaches to…

This book is not only for people that want or need to improve their health but also for the caregivers. The author references the yin/yang symbol as the negative and positive aspects of our lives. She shows how to increase the positivity and decrease the negativity in your life. She discusses the higher self and lower self and how we need balance in our lives.

The book is divided into two parts. The first part is about understanding while the second part is about doing the work. As I read the book, I realized there were things I needed to change in my life to improve my health. I have respiratory issues and limited mobility. I know I need to make sure I continue to take my medication as prescribed and to get as much exercise as my body will allow. If I don’t, I will be expressing power over other people in the form of them taking care of me.

She goes into great detail about the importance of twelve-step programs as support systems. I love the meditations included. They address being mindful and loving kindness which are especially important these days. The book is written in an easy to read format. I was able to finish it quickly and will refer back to it over and over again. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to improve their health or just bring balance into their lives.
