In 1934, Elsa and Paul, German Jews, have purchased Pensione Alexandria in Naples. As Fascism grows under Mussolini, their lives become difficult. The pensione cannot operate and they are forced to sell. Since their children were born in Italy, they do not have a problem getting immigration papers to go to the United States. Unfortunately, since Elsa and Paul are from Germany, it takes them longer and much more money to be able to leave.

This is a beautiful story told by Elsa and written by her grandson. It shows how everyday life can change suddenly. The book has a steady pace, the characters are well developed, and it is written in the first-person point of view. The author has a descriptive writing style so I felt as if I could see the pensione. If you like books about World War II or overcoming obstacles, you will enjoy this book.
