The book begins with the explosion in Natchez Burning. The central theme is the assassination of John F. Kennedy. Tom Cage, Penn’s father, and his friend, former Texas Ranger, Walt Garrity, are still on the run for the murder of Tom’s former nurse, Viola Turner.

The Knox family have infiltrated all areas of government and police services. It is hard for Penn to know who to trust.

Caitlin Masters, Penn’s fiancé, and local newspaper publisher teams up with photojournalist, Jordan Glass to uncover the secrets of the bone tree. This tree is a legend and many wonder of its existence. Caitlin is left to finish what journalist, Henry Sexton started and paid for with his life.

This is the second in the Natchez Burning trilogy. It is emotional and there are violent scenes some of which left me stunned. The characters are more developed than the previous book. I believe they will continue to develop into the next book. The action jumps back and forth between the 1960s and 2005, in the months after Hurricane Katrina. The past portions are written in the third person point of view and the recent parts are in the first-person point of view.

The narrator, Robert Petkoff is a good narrator. I was a little disappointed in the change of narrators since I was used to the previous voice as Penn Cage. If you enjoy reading historical fiction or conspiracy theories, you may enjoy reading or listening to this book.
