Elena is a toad living in a murky pond. When she begins to shed her skin, she feels a change come over her. She wakes up and finds herself naked in human form. She steals a coat from a sheep herder and returns home unaware of how much time has passed. Grand Mere is in the kitchen when she arrives back at the house and is surprised by her arrival. Seven years had passed while she was under the curse. Grand Mere explains that times were hard, and she had to sell the vineyard. Elena must prove her worth to the new owner so she can stay in the only home she has ever known.
This is the first book in the Vine Witch series. The story is written in third person point of view. The story has a steady pace, and the characters are well developed. The story gripped me from the first page and held my interest throughout. I immediately began the second book in the series, The Glamourist. If you like books about magic, you will really enjoy this book.
