Petra Kurkova lives in a boarding house while her husband, Marek, is serving in the army in the Carpathian Mountains. During the day, she reads cards and tells fortunes but at night she dresses in her husband’s clothes and goes out with her camera. She takes pictures of ghosts and shadows. One night, she is confronted by Josef Svoboda, a former soldier. She eludes him and sneaks back into her apartment only to find him sitting at her table. He is there to recruit her for her magical talents to help the war effort. She asks which side –the Empire or the tsar.
The story has a steady pace, the characters are developed, and it is written in the third person point of view. The author did an amazing job writing with such detail that the reader can almost feel the snow and cold wet weather. If you like historical fiction with a magical twist, you may enjoy reading this book.
