The book discusses individual cases. It includes statistics comparing the United States to other countries – the U.S. has the highest percentage of prisoners. This is mostly because of changes in policy, not an increase in criminal activity.
In Madison, Wisconsin, a group of people spend an evening simulating what it is like for a parolee just released from prison. Many of the volunteers were frustrated and did not accomplish the necessary tasks. They were made aware of the challenges to re-entering society in finding a job and a place to live.
The poetry by Sterling was nice. He is still waiting for his release. He waits for his friends to touch the fire hydrant outside the prison as he flashes his light in acknowledgement. The author’s research sheds light on the prison system and why changes should be made. If you are interested in social effects, justice in society and making things better, this would be a good read.
