Detective Casey Butler and her husband, Sheriff Eric Dalton, are the creators and law enforcement of Haven’s Rock, an off the grid community somewhere in the Yukon Territory. They welcomed the birth of their daughter, Rory, at the end of the last book and now she is six months old.

While out on an excursion, Butler and Dalton come across two hikers, Blake and Gretchen. Something about the couple feels off to them. Blake is claiming he twisted his ankle, but Casey does not necessarily believe him. Returning to the area the next day, Butler and Dalton see a grizzly bear dragging a dead body. When they look closer, they realize it is Blake. They also see evidence he was murdered before the bear got to him. Since Haven’s Rock is a sanctuary for people hiding from the outside world, they must do everything to protect outsiders from stumbling upon them.

The book has a steady pace, the characters are developed, and it is written in the first-person point of view. This is a well written series but best read in order. If you like mysteries, especially in isolated locations, you may enjoy reading this book.
