Mexican Gothic
Noemi Taboada is living life out loud in 1950 Mexico City. Her father calls her at the party and demands she return home as soon as possible. Fearing she will be chided for keeping company with a man her father has deemed unacceptable, she enters her father’s study. To her surprise, that is not the topic her father wants to discuss.
Her cousin, Catalina, has written a cryptic letter that her husband’s family and the house are trying to kill her. Her father tells Noemi that she will be traveling to High Place to investigate the letter and determine what, if any, help Catalina needs. The house and its inhabitants are creepy, to say the least. The longer Noemi stays, the more nightmares she has. She believes Catalina is write, the house is evil. Befriended by Francis, the younger nephew of Virgil, Catalina’s husband, Noemi tries to get help for Catalina.
The story is unusual and at times I wondered where it was going but I stayed with it to the end and was glad that I did. The unanticipated ending was perfect. The characters were somewhat developed, and it was written in the third person point of view. This is a dark gothic tale of lust and desire bordering on horror.
