Casey Butler is a detective married to Sheriff Eric Dalton. They are creating a haven town for people who need to get away from society. This is a renewed version of Rockton, the original town. When Casey and Eric arrive at Haven Rock, they are told two of the construction crew, the woman architect, and a man, the engineer, are missing. They begin to search and after Casey falls into a hidden pit, she finds the body of a woman. Since they do not know the crew, they assume it to be the missing architect. While they continue searching, they come across a mountain woman, Lilith, and her pet wolf. The next threat to their new society. Is a gold mining operation near their boundary.
The story is fast paced, the characters are well developed, and it is written in the first person point of view. Although this is a carry-over from the Rockton series, you can read this book without having read the first series. With this story, we are meeting some of the construction crew and can see the different personalities. The author does an excellent job creating characters who are believable and have depth. I look forward to reading the next book in the series, The Boy Who Cried Bear.
