Scientist Nick Bowman is attacked on his way home. He hides a microchip in his mouth before the attackers put a bag over his head. A second scientist also goes missing. The common denominator between them is their work with rare earth elements used in cellular phones. Investigators need to solve this before another scientist is taken.

FBI agent Andra Bailey is good at her job. She has learned how to function with her sociopathic issues and tries to show empathy even if she does not feel it. During the investigation, she must also address issues with her father, a college professor, who was arrested.

While investigating the disappearance of Dana Thorpe, a metallurgist, and Lee Nam, a North Korean expert on encryption, Bailey gets some unusual help. Dukko is Lee Nam’s body guard. He is humiliated that Lee Nam was taken during his watch and feels he cannot go back to North Korea without him. Garrett Thorpe, Dana’s son, teams up with Andra Bailey to help find his mother.

Detective Jocelyn Larson works in Washington, D.C. She is investigating a death of a scientist. She is frustrated at times with the investigation since there are more questions than answers. Is it possible the two cases are related?

I have read most of L.J. Sellers’ Detective Jackson series. Her writing style is clean and believable. Ms Sellers has written about strong women working in a mostly male environment. If you enjoy mysteries and thrillers, you should take a look at this book.
