Penn Gage gets a call that his father, Tom, has suffered a heart attack and was asking for him. His prognosis is not good. By the time Penn gets there, Tom is out of surgery but does not remember asking for Penn. Tom’s younger brother, Jack, arrives at the hospital after Tom wakes up. Penn takes him back to the house to rest from his travels. During the ride, Penn tells him about a past case while caring for his dying wife, Sarah.

Maribel Avila was raped by the boss’ son. The forensics lab did not find any evidence, but it was a shoddy investigation. The lead prosecutor does not want interference by Penn. He has a big drug cartel case coming up and doesn’t want to cast doubt on the evidence process.

The story has a steady pace, the characters are somewhat developed, and it is written as a story being told. There is also first-person point of view narration. The narrator, David Ledoux brought the characters to life. I enjoyed listening to this book. If you are a fan of the Penn Gage series, this book occurs before the Natchez Burning trilogy.
