Sylah lives in the Dredge with the Dusters. Dusters are the workers and have blue blood. Embers are the upper class and have red blood. Ghostings are maimed after birth, they become servants, and have translucence blood.

Until six years ago, Sylah was a part of the Sandstorm, a group that wanted to take over control the Embers. They spent years training for the day they would compete and win the positions of Disciples and eventually become Wardens.

Anoor is the daughter of the Disciple of Strength and granddaughter to the Warden of Strength. She is a disappointment to her mother. She is too soft and eats too much. Hassa is a servant moving through the world invisible. She taught Sylah how to communicate with the Ghosting type of sign language.

The book had a steady pace, the characters were developed, and it was written in the third person point of view. The author has a very descriptive writing style. This book reminds me of the Hunger Games. The book has an ending but has a lead in for the next book in the series. I cannot wait to read the next installment.  If you like dystopian style books, you will enjoy this book.
