It has been four years since the last Shetland book, Wild Fire. Jimmy Perez and his former supervisor, Willow Reeves are relocated to the Orkney Islands and started a family. They have four-year-old James and a baby on the way. It is winter and the islands are full of holiday festivities. The family is planning to spend a quiet holiday but all that changes when Jimmy gets a phone call that Archie Stout, a cousin and his oldest friend, is missing. Jimmy joins the search and unfortunately is the one to find Archie. He was found dead with a legendary Viking stone next to him. With a heavy storm keeping the investigative team stuck in Glasgow, it is up to Jimmy and Willow to find Archie’s killer.

The book has a fast pace, the characters are well developed, and it is written in the third person point of view. Although this is a listed as a new series, it is a continuation of the Shetland main characters Jimmy Perez and Willow Reeves. I had to re-read the last Shetland book for continuity. The narration was well done and gave life to the characters.
