Detective Superintendent Peter Diamond is called out on a case when the body of a naked woman is pulled out of a lake. No one knows who she is or where she came from. A police sketch is released to the public and many calls come in saying it is, Gerry Snoo, a television actress.

Three boys are playing along a weir when one of them falls into the rough water. Without thinking, Professor Greg Jackman goes in after the boy saving his life. He gets away from the scene before anyone notices him. A reporter believes it is a wonderful human-interest story and wants to find the hero even if he does not want to be found.

Diamond’s career is still reeling from a previous arrest and accusations of persuasion and brutality. Headquarters sends Inspector Wigfull to work with him on this case, but Diamond believes he is there to keep an eye on him.

The story has a steady pace, there characters are developed, and it is written in the third person point of view. I really. Enjoyed Peter Diamond. He is flawed, opinionated and believable. I look forward to reading more in the Peter Diamond book series. If you like British police procedurals with a cranky detective, you will enjoy this book.
