Belen has a miscarriage. The courts do not believe her and treat her like a criminal. They believe she had an abortion and she is sentenced for her supposed crime. Belen is not her true name but is used to protect her identity. As it is written, Belen could be any woman.
As a true story, this is frightening to any woman. Instead of getting the care she needed, she was sentenced to prison. This is written by a woman following the story. She did an excellent job researching and providing insider information. If you have an interest in reproductive rights, this would be a good book to read.
