Women’s fashion has always been about making a statement. The Gibson girl with the hourglass waist was one of the first fashion changes in society. Then there were actresses like Greta Garbo, Audrey Hepburn, and Marlene Dietrich. Magazines had their say as well with Glamour, Vogue, Women’s Wear Daily, and Ladies Home Journal changing attitudes.

The National Organization for Women (NOW) has always been in the forefront of women’s rights. Betty Friedan wore more conservative clothes, but Bella Abzug wore bright colors and big jewelry, and Gloria Steinem wore turtleneck tops with pants and belts.

The messages have always been mixed about what women should wear. The author did an amazing job researching the different types of styles along with the attitudes that have changed with the times. As a longtime member of NOW, it was nice to see it mentioned in this book. If you are interested in women’s fashion and its history, you will enjoy reading this one.
