The story did not end when Ayleth married the King. In fact, that is just when things get interesting. Blodwyn, the king’s daughter, is turning sixteen. Ayleth invites her back to the kingdom. What she does not expect is the king’s sister, Margaret, to try and take control by telling the court Blodwyn was ready to assume her position as heir. Ayleth does not want to relinquish control but before she can respond, Gavin, another candidate, declares his right to challenge and invoke Braxos’ trials. Only a few know of Ayleth’s true nature and those few do not know everything. Ayleth is enjoying her connection with Malum and the shadows. She will do everything in her power to keep her power.
The book has a steady pace, the characters are developed, and it is written in the first-person point of view. This is the second book in the series. If you enjoy books by Gregory McGuire, you will enjoy reading this retelling of Snow White and the Evil Queen.
